Learn
what you may; teach what you know.
Come,
work and play with us in 16th century Wales.
Yr Gwyliad ("The
Watch")
The members of Yr Gwyliad
represent a fictitious band of Welsh "Freedom Fighters" which plague
the borderlands of England & Wales during the Tudor Dynasty.
Unhappy with English rule in
Wales, yet cognizant of the futility of immediate rebellion, Yr Gwyliad turns
its activities towards controlling the abuses meted out by English
"justice" & the small group of equally ravenous Welsh gentry &
nobility who hope to reestablish the excesses of the Marcher Lords.
This small band of hardy
fighters is backed by the Lord and Lady of Pelhafyn, a fortified outpost off the
coast of Anglesey. While they acknowledge the good intentions of the
English monarchy, local law is a fair distance from London & the Queen's
gimlet eye. Yr Gwyliad keeps to the right side of the law... Most of the
time!
Their
time at
Shrewsbury
represents a
visit to The Boars Head Inn.
With family ties to the owners, the Lord and
Lady of Pelhafyn have brought certain members of their
household for a restful visit to a village faire and
time spent with family & friends.
And,
perhaps, a little “business” on the side…
At this time, the resistance
is in sore need of men-at-arms, clothiers, and crafters of various types.
To keep up morale, they are also seeking Welsh
Storytellers and Musicians.

The Wonderful World Of the Renaissance
When you walk through the gates of
a Renaissance Faire for the first time, your senses find themselves assaulted
without mercy. Food of all imaginable kinds- the scent of perfumed
oils, leather & incense. Voices-so foreign & yet so
familiar. Recognizable words spoken with a European twist! Velvet
& Jewels vie with tatters and filth.
Sensual is the touch of velvet
and suede as you model an expensive handmade cloak in front of a polished piece
of silver medal. Sensuous (at least for the Lady Patron) is the brush of
lips
upon your hand as the handsome pirate captain confesses that you are the very
sun of his existence.
For the average layman
patron, this is only a fraction of the experience awaiting you beyond the gates
of Faire...
For the
Actor/Participant,
however, Faire boasts much more. To become part of such a fascinating past,
to create a character that evolves & gathers history with each faire... to
play that thin line between fantasy & reality....

Sooo... What Does a Renaissance Guild Do, Anyway?
A Renaissance Guild is a group
of people interested in the recreation of the Renaissance in Great
Britain. The period in question usually lies between the early 16th
century, under King Henry VIII, & the latter 16th Century, under Queen
Elizabeth 1.
Individuals in a guild assume
the personae of real or fictional people during a given era. A guild
serves to educate its members in the speech, history & behavior of the age,
according to social class. Information is made available to assist one in
choosing a persona to portray. Information is also given in regards to
making or obtaining suitable clothing. Those who desire may also learn
songs of the period, improvisational acting, juggling, embroidery, theatrical
combat & more. A guild also serves to garner & distribute news
among its members about upcoming Faires & events, workshops, & the
activities of other guilds.
We invite you to escape the
world around us for an Age of Pageantry, Romance & Adventure!
Yr Gwyliad is a non-profit,
non-paying Renaissance Guild. It is not affiliated in any way with the
Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA). Yr Gwyliad is
an Historically
Interpretive Entertainment Group, whose purpose is to be informative and
exciting for members and audience alike. As with any performance troupe, commitment,
professionalism and enthusiasm are paramount.
